PDSA

PDSA stands for Plan-Do-Study-Act. It’s a problem-solving model that helps improve processes and implement change. PDSA is an iterative model that emphasizes learning and adaptation through real-world feedback

How PDSA works:

  1. Plan: Develop an initiative
  2. Do: Implement the plan
  3. Study: Analyze the results
  4. Act: Make adjustments or continue with what was implemented

FOCUS (F = Find a problem, O = Organize a team, C = Clarify the problem, U = Understand a problem, S = Select an intervention) and PDSA (P = Plan, D = Do, S = Study, A = Act) (FOCUS-PDSA) is a popular strategy that was established to improve processes and quality.

Running a PDSA cycle is another way of saying testing a change — you develop a plan to test the change (Plan), carry out the test (Do), observe, analyze, and learn from the test (Study), and determine what modifications, if any, to make for the next cycle (Act).

DMAIC

DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. It’s a data-driven problem-solving method used to improve processes, products, and designs. DMAIC is a core tool used in Six Sigma projects. 

How DMAIC works 

  1. Define: Identify the problem, the output to be improved, and the customers
  2. Measure: Collect data to establish a baseline for improvement
  3. Analyze: Analyze the data to find the root causes of defects
  4. Improve: Develop, test, and implement solutions to improve the process
  5. Control: Implement process controls to sustain the improvements
